VENEZUELA: The Latin American “cuckoo clock”

It is no novelty here in Venezuela that our demented president has a surge of ideas under the preamble of “it occurs to me…” to do such and such a change in our Bolivarian Republic. Every time he goes into the radio transmission waves he says that cliché phrase of his. He is not content with being the reincarnation of Simon Bolivar or that of other historical personages, honourable or rogues as long as it fits his speech of the moment. Now he thinks of himself as a Latin American “cuckoo clock” in wanting to change the time meridian to one that suits his whim, simply because he wants the children to wake up during sunlight hours and not under early dawn ones.

So instead of changing time schedules, he goes and wants to change the whole meridian time chronogram, replacing the Greenwich Meridian by which everybody sets their watches and machines, to one in the State of Sucre in eastern Venezuela. One could summarize “his revolution” as one of changing the names and places of things simply because he disagrees with all orderly established things, including history. You are all aware how he charged at Christopher Columbus for discovering America, now he is charging against the time schedule of the world, since he wants a time of his own, the Bolivarian Time.

Chavez has not said cuckoo yet, but he is very close to it or says it under the bed sheets. So far he has had to postpone such a change since many chronograms have to be changed including one that has to do with international agreements and national time by which machines, bank vaults and normal schedules go by. This takes some time to coordinate and not as quickly as Chavez wanted it to happen. Many are really anxious to hear him “cuckoo” and send him on his merry way to the insane asylum.
